Pneumatic edge milling machine
vs. Electric Edger – the crucial difference

Electric edge routers are heavy and lead to faster fatigue with daily use. Pneumatic edge routers are significantly lighter and allow for an extremely Sensitive tool feedback. The result: clean radii, precise chamfers, and a noticeably joint-friendly workflow. The difference is immediately apparent to employees, especially during continuous use.

How the Hessler edge milling technology works

The workflow is designed for maximum efficiency in everyday workshop operations:

  • Multiplex
  • Solid wood
  • Veneer
  • Melamine
  • HPL / Compact Boards
  • ABS edging
  • PP edging
  • PVC edging
  • Plastic sheets (e.g. acrylic, PE, PET)

This covers all common materials in modern furniture and interior design.

Edge banding methods and why the edge trimmer is always included

Edges can be applied in different ways – using the Edge banding machine, with edge banders, with hot air systems or even with laser systems. Regardless of the method, a small overhang or a visible edge always results, which needs to be reworked. This is exactly where the edge profiler comes in: it ensures that the edge becomes perfectly rounded, cleanly chamfered or flush. Without an edge profiler, a high-quality visible edge Hardly reachable.

FAQ on Edge Trimmers

Why should I use a pneumatic edge milling machine from Heßler instead of a classic electric router?
The crucial difference lies in weight and ergonomics. Conventional electric edge planers are often very heavy, which leads to rapid fatigue and joint strain with prolonged use. Our pneumatic edge planer KF 400 III is extremely light, fits perfectly in the hand, and offers a much more sensitive planing feel, meaning your arm and wrist won't get tired while working.
No. The edge planers described here are specifically designed for carpenters, joiners, and woodworking and plastic processing. For metal, steel, and the levelling of weld seams, we offer specialised solutions for metal in our range, such as our weld seam routers and weld seam nibblers.
Our test offer is exclusively for commercial customers (joiners, cabinet makers, interior fitters, and industrial companies). You can test a machine in your own company on your real workpieces for a period of 1 week, completely without obligation and free of charge, to convince yourself of its ease of use and functionality. The scope of testing covers approximately 10 metres of edge and 20 corners. Simply contact us using our form, via email, or by telephone; see the Contact page.
As far as we know, Heßler Maschinensysteme from Lübbecke, Germany, is currently the only manufacturer in the wood-plastic sector. Previously, there was an edge milling machine from Lamello similar to the KF 400 III, for example the Lamello Profila P or the Lamello Profila P2, Profila Pro and Profila Pro Plus. These have not been manufactured for several years. Many users of the Lamello pneumatic edge milling machines have switched to our product and are very satisfied.

Many joinery workshops are familiar with Lamello’s earlier pneumatic edge moulders (Profila P, Profila P2, Profila Pro, Profila Pro Plus). These models have not been manufactured for years. Users who require a modern, lightweight and ergonomic solution are now switching to our KF‑400 series.

Current pneumatic tools from Asia are designed for metalworking or general grinding applications. They lack both the necessary fine control and the base plate guidance specifically optimised for wood and plastics. Consequently, they are unsuitable for precise radii and chamfers on furniture components.

Heßler Maschinensysteme is today the only manufacturer that develops and produces a genuine compressed-air edge milling machine specifically for wood and plastic edges.

Yes, we would be happy to hear about your special requirements. For example, we have realised the following use cases:

  1. Cross layers in cross-laminated timber A manufacturer of large glulam panels and glulam beams wanted to quickly and cleanly remove the tear-out that occurred when drilling 16 mm holes. The previously used freehand countersink resulted in uneven outcomes. This was resolved with a special milling cutter with a centering cone, which allows the cutters to be positioned quickly and securely in the hole. The chamfers are uniform and clean.
  2. Milling internal corners A kitchen manufacturer wanted to use the lightweight pneumatic edge trimming router for flush trimming edge overhangs, even into inside corners, and for routing with a radius. The aim was to be able to continue pushing it seamlessly around 90° inside corners onto the second side of the inside corner. This was achieved with a special base plate with a second handle and cut-outs on the underside to accommodate the edge banding overhang.
  3. Partially bevelled fronts: For manufacturers of so-called partially bevelled fronts with a rebate, we have repeatedly built special constructions that allow the transition from the former 90° narrow side to the partially bevelled narrow side to be machined. The edge banding attached to the bevelled part of the narrow side is milled flush with the remaining 90° narrow side.
  4. Indexable milling cutter The base plate on single-handle routers has a standard inner hole diameter of only 24.5 mm. For routers with insert bits, we enlarge the diameter in consultation with the customer. The aim is a sufficiently large hole and, at the same time, the smallest possible diameter for the inner hole. This particularly improves guidance when sliding onto and off the plate, and prevents tilting into an excessively large inner hole. This is applied, for example, in the manufacture of flight cases from multiplex panels.
  5. Removal of limescale in stair construction: After the strips have been glued together to form a rough stair tread, beads of glue emerge from the glued joints. If these glue beads are removed with the sanding belt, they quickly wear out the sanding belt in the wide-belt grinding machine and clog it up. Using a base plate that is also fitted with runners, the edge router is guided over the wooden beads like a sledge and they are chipped or milled off. This protects the sanding belt in the wide-belt grinding machine and avoids premature replacement. This can be applied, for example, to the following manufacturers and machines:
